Neiko

Neiko is a 6 year old male Belgian Malinois. Neiko had what’s known as a foreign body obstruction, which is an intestinal blockage. Neiko required immediate surgery or he would die. The average foreign body surgery at Kentucky urgent care facilities and emergency clinics is $4,000-$6,000, without the ability to make payments. The average Kentuckian cannot raise this amount immediately in order to save their pet. This results in a high rate of economic euthanasias at Kentucky’s veterinary hospitals.

Neiko’s mom took him to the veterinarian and was given estimates, that she simply could not afford, of $4,500-$6,000. That’s when she was referred to our surgical partner, Focus Veterinary Care, who provided the surgery at an affordable and flat rate of $1,250. With their help, Neiko was able to get back to his normal life in no time. He received quality care and treatment which allowed him to be returned home to his mom, where he belongs.

The financial support and guidance from our organization gave Neiko’s owner the ability to pay for his affordable surgery over time rather than euthanize her sweet boy. VTTR’s emergency fund allows Focus Veterinary Care to proceed with these procedures without the full cost up front by stepping in to cover the cost until it can be recouped. These families are capable of paying for their procedures, but not at a moment’s notice and with very high estimates.

Neiko’s story is a powerful reminder that all pets deserve access to affordable care so they can be reunited with their families.
